Broncos make first visit to Valley Fields since 2013
The Marquette University women's soccer team (3-3-1) wraps up the non-conference portion of its 2022 schedule Thursday night at 7 p.m. CT when the team welcomes Western Michigan (0-3-3) to Valley Fields.
Following Thursday's action, the Golden Eagles will have a week to prepare for the BIG EAST Conference lidlifter at DePaul at 4 p.m. CT on Thursday, Sept. 22.
Short Series Includes PostseasonÂ
Marquette owns a slight edge in the all-time series with a 2-1 advantage, but the Broncos were able to claim the most important matchup to date.
WMU earned a 1-0 victory over the Golden Eagles in the opening round of the NCAA tournament at Valley Fields on Nov. 15, 2013.
MU claimed the BIG EAST regular season and tournament titles that season, finishing 9-0-0 in league play and 18-4-0 overall, and the loss snapped a 13-match winning streak.
Cook, Bueckers Lead MU Rally
Trailing 1-0 with 30 minutes left at St. Thomas on Sept. 8, newcomers Isabella Cook and Elizabeth Bueckers allowed Marquette to rally for the 2-1 win with a pair of second-half scores.
Cook, a transfer from Tennessee, tied the match with a blast from the top of the box, her second goal of the year (PK at CMU) and Bueckers, in her first season after arriving from IUPUI, netted her first score as a Golden Eagle seven minutes later for the game winner.Â
MU Scores Early & Often vs. GB
Marquette's Alex Campana opened the scoring just 57 seconds into the match against Green Bay and while it would prove to be the only score MU would need, that didn't stop her teammates from finding the back of the net as well.
Five different players scored on Sept. 4 at Valley Fields, including Julia O'Neill and Cate Downs, who netted their respective first collegiate goals.
The match marked the team's highest scoring output since the 2020-21 opener against Chicago State, with five players also scoring in the 5-0 win.Â
Top Scorers Return In 2022Â
Marquette returns each of its top four scorers from 2021, a group that accounted for 42 total points (16 goals and 10 assists).
Three-time All-BIG EAST Second Team honoree Katrina Wetherell topped the roster in both categories (5 g, 12 points) and senior Rachel Johnson, who started all 17 matches, was second with four scores and 11 points.
All-BIG EAST Freshman Team selection Maggie Starker netted a pair of match winners in her four-goal debut campaign and junior Elsi Twombly already owns seven scores in her first two-plus seasons of action.
Overall, Marquette returns a group of eight players who accounted for 21 of the team's 23 goals last season.
MU Celebrates 30th BirthdayÂ
The Golden Eagles celebrate their 30th birthday in 2022, welcoming back former players to campus Oct. 13-16 for a reunion.
The program has collected nearly 400 wins during its tenure and participated in the NCAA tournament on 13 occasions. Â MU has claimed 10 regular season league titles in Conference USA and BIG EAST action and four conference tournament titles.
Individual success includes 119 all-conference honorees, 49 all-region selections, 19 national team appearances and 17 All-America accolades.Â
