Marquette opens league play Sept. 22 at DePaul
The Marquette University women's soccer team (4-3-1) concluded the non-conference portion of its schedule Thursday night with a 2-0 victory against Western Michigan (0-4-3) at Valley Fields.
Â
The Golden Eagles netted two goals on 13 shot attempts. MU moved the ball effectively throughout the match recording four assists on its two goals.
"I'm ecstatic about the win," head coach Frank Pelaez said. "It's always a blessing to be at Valley Fields, especially after a five-day road trip. The girls feel the energy and can't wait to get on the field.Â
"The are willing to do whatever it takes and know they are going to get lumps on their head at times, but are always going to give them back and tonight was a good example of that," Pelaez added.
Â
Maggie Starker got the Golden Eagles on the board early with her first goal of the season in the fourth minute. MU held the one goal advantage until late into the first half when sophomore Kate Gibson found the back of the net in the 44th minute. Marquette took the 2-0 lead into the break.
Â
The two first-half goals proved to be enough as the Marquette defense carried the Golden Eagles the rest of the way. The MU defense held strong fighting off three second half shot attempts from the Broncos. Chloe Olson and Mikki Easter combined for the clean sheet after Easter relieved Olson at the half. Â
Â
Marquette returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 4 p.m. CT when the team travels to DePaul for the BIG EAST Conference lidlifter.
