Golden Eagles back in action Sunday at Butler
The Marquette University women's soccer team (5-3-1, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) opened BIG EAST Conference play Thursday afternoon with a 3-2 victory at DePaul (2-6-0, 0-1-0 BIG EAST) at Wish Field.
Falling behind 1-0 after DePaul scored on its first shot of the match, Marquette pulled even on Mia Haertle's first-career goal. Her perfectly placed corner kick landed in the middle of the box and deflected off the hand of the Blue Demon keeper and into the back of the net inside the far post.
"The great thing about this team is that it never gets too high or too low," head coach Frank Pelaez said. "We responded well after falling behind and finished strong after DePaul's second goal. Winning on the road is extremely heard, especially in the BIG EAST. It's always a grind."
Marquette moved ahead on Isabella Cook's second penalty kick of the season at the 55:18 mark, courtesy of a foul drawn by forward Maggie Starker in the box. Julia O'Neill pushed Marquette's advantage to 3-1 seven minutes later with her second goal of the campaign and MU was able to hold on for the 3-2 victory.
Netminder Chloe Olson picked up her fourth win of the campaign, while making a pair of saves.
Marquette returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 12 p.m. CT when the team travels to Butler to complete the two-match road swing.
