Sunesson scores pair of PK goals as Golden Eagles fall short
MILWAUKEE — The Marquette men's soccer team (3-3, 0-0 BIG EAST) fell to Yale on Saturday night, dropping a 3-2 decision at Valley Fields.
"The past two games we've had a lot of the ball and we've had opportunities, and today was just a little frustrating," said Marquette head coach Louis Bennett. "We gave them two penalties, and we earned two penalties. It's a harsh way to learn by losing a game, so this was disappointing."Â
Despite a combined 24 shots in the match between the two sides, four of the five goals scored on the night came on penalty kicks, including all four second-half goals.Â
The lone non-penalty kick goal came early in the contest, when the Bulldogs struck in the seventh minute to establish a lead which they would hold for the remainder of the half. In the 47th minute of action, senior striker Lukas Sunesson scored on a PK following a hand ball in the box to even the score at 1-1, but Yale pulled back ahead in the 58th minute on a PK following a foul by Marquette's Tristan Rønnestad-Stevens.Sunesson went on to score his second penalty kick goal of the game in the 80th minute after a foul was called in the box.Â
The contest remained knotted up at 2-2 until the 85th minute, when MU goalkeeper Chandler Hallwood was sent off with a red card for violent behavior, which resulted in another penalty kick for Yale. Freshman keeper Ludvig Målberg entered the match and got a hand on the shot, but was unable to keep it out of the net.
In total, MU took 13 shots including seven on goal, while Yale totaled 11. Seven different Marquette players took shots, including six with two or more.
With his third and fourth goals of the season, Sunesson now leads the Golden Eagles in goals this season.Â
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles will remain home next week as they host cross-town foe Milwaukee 1-4-2, 0-0 Horizon) on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. at Valley Fields.
