Men's and women's teams in action at three events
The Marquette University men's and women's tennis teams completed their respective opening weekends of the 2022-23 campaign with action at a trio of events across the region.
The 46th Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic featured four players from men's squad and a pair of players from the women's team, with the remainder of the men's roster traveling to the Drake Invitational. The women's team also participated in the Gopher Invite, hosted by Minnesota.
"It was good to get our players out there competing for the first event of the year, it's a long process and starting that journey together is always an exciting time," director of tennis Steve Rodecap said. "It was a great opportunity for new leaders to step up in both programs and we are really excited to continue to grow with both groups."
At the MTC, Ian Brady and Stefan Dragovic competed in doubles action for the men's team. The pair earned an opening win in main draw action but fell in their second outing. Senior Rami Scheetz and freshman Thomas Nelson also saw action in the singles main draw. For the women, Lara Kaiser and Emilija Kojcic also competed in the main draw.
Highlights for the women's team at Minnesota included freshmen Emma Davis going undefeated on the weekend in singles action with three victories in her collegiate debut. The Golden Eagles claimed a total of seven wins in singles action on the weekend and won four of its six doubles matches on Friday. The duo of Sarah Badawi and Giulia Turconi earned a pair of victories in their two doubles matches on Sunday.
The men's team featured eight players at Drake in singles and doubles action. In singles action, freshmen Blake Roegner, Guilherme Da Matta, and Zino Varouhas-Poole all earned their first career victories in their debut as Golden Eagles. In the doubles main draw Pablo Dale and Guilherme Da Matta earned two victories but came up short in the semifinals.
