Golden Eagles post shutout against Bulls for second win of the season
MILWAUKEE — The Marquette men's soccer team (2-1-0, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) earned its second victory of the season as it took down USF on Friday night at Valley Fields in a 1-0 contest.
"There were some things that we can learn from this, and they're a lot easier to win when we wake up tomorrow morning with a win," said Marquette head coach Louis Bennett. "Our collective defending and the way we kept the ball out of the back of the net was superb."
The Golden Eagles found themselves in a back and forth defensive battle early on, ending the first 45 minutes of action scoreless with four shots, while allowing five from USF in the first half.
Momentum shifted into Marquette's favor in the 65th minute, when a penalty kick was awarded to MU for a hand ball inside the penalty box. Senior midfielder Zyan Andrade put the penalty kick past the keeper for the first and only score of the contest. This was Andrade's team-leading third goal of the season.
USF played the final portion of the game down a man, after attacker Oscar Resano was booked in the 78th minute after a disagreement with officials.Â
Senior keeper Chandler Hallwood earned the shutout after spending all 90 minutes in goal in what was his first action of the season. He posted six saves while facing 15 shots in the contest.Â
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles will remain at home as they host the Michigan Wolverines (3-2-0) on Friday, Sept. 9 at 7:05 p.m. CT at Valley Fields.Â
