Marquette plays at Fiserv Forum in 3-of-4 outings
The Marquette University men's basketball team (12-4, 4-1 BIG EAST) continues BIG EAST play on Saturday, Jan. 7 when the squad hosts Georgetown (5-11, 0-5 BIG EAST) in Fiserv Forum at 1 p.m. CT. FS1 features the television broadcast, with Jeff Levering (play-by-play) and Brian Butch (analyst) calling the action. Saturday's outing begins a stretch of 3-of-4 games at home for the Golden Eagles and includes matchups with No. 4/5 UConn (Jan. 11) and Providence (Jan. 18).
Marquette Owns Edge In All-Time Series
Marquette owns a 19-14 advantage in the all-time series, with the Golden Eagles claiming wins in nine of the last 12 outings.
All but two of the series matchups have come since Marquette joined the BIG EAST in 2005-06.
The programs first met during the 1941-42 campaign and the Hoyas were able to claim a 35-34 victory. The next meeting didn't come until the 1971-72 season and Marquette posted an 88-44 winning decision.
Marquette swept the home-and-home series in 2021-22, earning a 92-64 win on the road on Jan. 7 and a 77-66 decision at Fiserv Forum on Feb. 16.
Prosper, Defense Lead To Win at St. John's
At halftime of Marquette's game at St. John's Tuesday night, forward Olivier-Maxence Prosper had four points and MU's defense had allowed the Red Storm to shoot 65.6 percent from the floor.
Fortunately for the Golden Eagles, who trailed 48-41 at the break, Prosper found his groove offensively and MU turned up the effort at the defensive end.
The Montreal native scored 25 of his 29 points in the second half and finished his 29 minutes of action 8-of-13 from the floor, including a 4-of-5 effort from behind the 3-point line. Prosper's point total marked his highest since netting 25 points against NC Central on Dec. 6 and his four treys matched a personal best.
Marquette opened the second half with a 16-2 run, turning the seven-point deficit into a 57-50 lead with 15 minutes left. The Red Storm turned the ball over eight times in the final 20 minutes and shot just 13-of-34 (38.2 percent) from the floor. After trailing by as many as 11 in the first half, MU led by 11 midway through the second stanza.
Marquette Collecting Impressive Road Efforts
Marquette, which claimed four total true road victories in 2021-22, now owns three midway through the 2022-23 campaign after Tuesday night's win at St.John's.
The Golden Eagles scored 96 points against St. John's, the most allowed in league action at Carnesseca Arena in regulation since it opened in 1961. Marquette's 102-94 win at Creighton on Jan. 17, 2017 is the last time MU has netted more than 96 points in regulation action (98 vs. Providence in 2OT this year) against a BIG EAST opponent.
On Dec. 31, the Golden Eagles claimed a 68-66 win at Villanova. The Wildcats have lost just three times (47-3) in BIG EAST play since 2013-14 at Finneran Pavilion, twice to Marquette (W, 57-54 in 2021-22).
MU also downed Notre Dame 79-64 on Dec. 11 to conclude non-conference play.
Golden Eagles Off To Strong League Start
In 2021-22, the Golden Eagles began the year 0-3 in BIG EAST play before rattling off seven-straight wins and finishing 11-8 in league action.
This year, Marquette sits at 4-1 in conference play and in third place through games of Jan. 4. The team's start is its best since a 4-1 effort through five games in 2018-19. After dropped a New Year's Day matchup at St. John's that season, Marquette won its next eight BIG EAST matchups and 12-of-14 overall.
