Golden Eagles close regular season play next Saturday
Akron, OHIO – The Marquette University men's soccer team (7-5-3, 1-4-2 BIG EAST) earns a 1–1 draw at No. 7 ranked Akron (9-1-6, 2-1-4 BIG EAST) Saturday evening at FirstEnergy Stadium.
Akron controlled possession early in the match, notching three shots on goal in the first 12 minutes. In the 12th minute Akron broke through MU's backline by way of a counter and Jason Shokalook took a shot on target, Ludvig Malberg deflected the shot, but Shokalook retained possession from the deflection and found the back of the net.
In the 17th minute the Golden Eagles counterattacked the Zips and Kyle Bebej's cross was deflected into the net by Akron resulting in an own goal to tie the score at 1-1.
As the pace of play slowed down in the later stages of the first half, the time of possession evened out for both teams. Both squads had quality looks on goal, but neither could finish opportunities at the net late in the half and went into intermission tied at 1-1.
The Golden Eagles backline held strong against the Zips increased pressure in the second half. MU countered Akron's pressure and had great looks on frame in the second half but could not find the back of the net.
The Zips led the Golden Eagles in shots 20-7, Akron also tallied 11 corner kicks to Marquette's five.
Abdoul Karim Pare led Marquette in shots on goal with three attempts on the night.
Malberg finished the match with six saves while facing 20 shots, only allowing one goal.
