SALT LAKE CITY – Despite a late rally, the Marquette University men's lacrosse team suffered a 18-16 defeat on Saturday afternoon to Utah at Rice-Eccles Stadium.Â
The Golden Eagles (1-1) scored three goals late in the fourth quarter to pull within one, 17-16, on Mason Woodward's tally with 1:15 to play. Woodward then picked up his career-best 12th ground ball of the game on the ensuing faceoff before MU called timeout.Â
Will Foster couldn't connect with Bobby O'Grady at the left side of the crease after the restart and the Utes added an empty net score for their final tally.
O'Grady paced Marquette once again with five goals, while junior transfer Matthew Winegardner posted a career-high four goals.
Utah (1-1) led by as many as four and received goals from 10 different players, paced by four scores from Jared Andreala.

The Golden Eagles continue their season-long four-game road swing on Wednesday, Feb. 15 against No. 7Â Notre Dame at the Loftus Sports Center.

NOTABLE:
- Woodward notched 12 ground balls, caused four turnovers and added his second goal of the year. His 12 ground balls are a program record for a non-faceoff specialst, surpassing the 10 that Noah Richard recorded against Denver on April 26, 2019.
- Woodward has posted at least five ground balls in 19 of his 33 career games.Â
- O'Grady posted his ninth career hat trick and his fifth game with at least five scores. He has now scored 11 times in two games this season and has scored 56 career goals through 17 games.
- MU falls to 2-0 against the Utes all-time with the loss. The Golden Eagles dropped a 12-11 decision to the Utes last season in Milwaukee and MUÂ played at Utah in a 2019 preseason scrimmage.
- Midfielder Nate Surd scored his first goal of the season late in the fourth quarter.
- Peter Detwiler notched his first career assist on a pass to O'Grady in transition with 1:30 to play in the third.
