Golden Eagles use late shot from Jordan King to go ahead in important league victory
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Marquette women's basketball team (17-8, 10-6 BIG EAST) won in dramatic fashion on the road Wednesday night, earning a 52-51 victory over Providence at Alumni Hall.
After the Golden Eagles started the game strong and saw their lead grow to as many as 20 points, Providence clawed back into the contest with strong defense down the stretch. Facing a 51-49 deficit late in the game, Marquette senior guard Jordan King hit a 3-pointer as the shot clock expired with 14.6 seconds left in the game to put MU back in front.
Marquette then clamped down on defense to force a pair of misses on the other end to stave off the comeback attempt and secure an important road win.
The trio of Chloe Marotta, King and Liza Karlen combined for 49 of Marquette's 52 points, finishing with 26, 15 and eight points, respectively. Marotta Also fell just one rebound shy of a double-double, while shooting 10-of-14 from the floor.
Marquette recorded 15 assists on 20 made shots, led by junior guard Rose Nkumu's five.
The Friars were paced by Janai Crooms and Nariah Scott, who each scored 11 points.

With 26 points tonight, Chloe Marotta recorded her fifth 20-plus point scoring game of the season and the eighth of her career.

King moved up to 21st on Marquette's all-time scoring list, passing Carolyn Kieger (2002-06). She now has 1,287 points in her career, and is just two points from entering the program's top-20.
-
Marquette has now won six of its past seven games, and improves to 4-5 on the road this season.
