Golden Eagles are off to best start in program history at 3-0
CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Marquette women's lacrosse team (3-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) remained perfect on the year as it picked up a 19-13 road win over Cincinnati Sunday afternoon at Nippert Stadium.Â
In a battle between two undefeated teams, the Golden Eagles came out on top to move to 3-0 on the young season and secure its best start to a campaign in program history.Â
After allowing the Bearcats a pair of goals early to face a 2-0 deficit just four minutes in, the Golden Eagles rallied back with three-straight goals to take the lead. Despite eight first quarter turnovers for Marquette, it was a back-and-forth first half before MU was able to gain a two-goal lead before the break.
Cincinnati eventually cut a Marquette lead that stretched to as many as five goals to just one with 8:25 remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Golden Eagles closed things out with a resilient response of five-straight goals over the next six minutes.Â
Marquette once again dominated the draw, led by draw control specialist Mary Blee who had a career-high tying 11 of the team's 22 draw controls on the afternoon. Ellie Henry and Emma Soccodato came up with six and four, respectively, while Soccodato scored a pair of goals as well.
Senior attacker Shea Garcia led MU's scoring efforts for the second-straight game with six points on five goals and an assist. Senior midfielder Lydia Foust and sophomore attacker Meg Bireley each finished with hat tricks as well, each totaling five points while scoring four goals and three goals, respectively.Â
In the net for Marquette, sophomore Brynna Nixon played all 60 minutes recording eight saves, one shy of a career high.
Cincinnati (3-1) was led by freshman attacker Camryn Callaghan, who had eight of the squad's 13 goals. MU is now 8-3 in the all-time series against the Bearcats.Â
