
Comeback falls short in MLAX loss to Bellarmine

The Golden Eagles played their first home game in over a month

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's lacrosse team's fourth quarter rally fell short in an 11-10 loss to Bellarmine at Valley Fields on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles (3-3) trailed by as many as six goals late in the third quarter before closing the game with six of the final seven scores.
Defenseman Zach Granger scored with eight seconds left in the third to pull MU within five, 10-5, before a natural hat trick from Devon Cowan to start the fourth quarter. The Knights scored their final goal between Cowan's second and third tallies and held off Marquette despite late scores from Jake Stegman and Luke Blanc.
The Golden Eagles had the ball with under two minutes left to play with a chance to tie, but couldn't break through. BU took control of the ball with just over a minute left and ran out the clock.
Blanc also posted a hat trick for the Golden Eagles and scored one of MU's two goals in the first half as BU held a 4-2 halftime edge.
The Knights (5-1), who are receiving votes in the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll, received four goals from Benny O'Rourk, while Jesse Roth added a pair.

The Golden Eagles head to Long Island to take on No. 8 Penn State on Saturday, March 18 in Levittown, New York at Gen. Douglas MacArthur High School.

NOTABLE:
- Faceoff specialist Grant Evans made the MU comeback possible by winning 8-of-12 faceoffs down the stretch. He also picked up four ground balls.
- MU is 5-4 all-time against Bellarmine and had won each of the last three meetings entering Saturday
- In total, Marquette has played three overtime games against the Knights and the winning team has scored 11-or-fewer goals in eight of the games. On five occasions neither of the teams have reached double-figure goals.
- Marquette claimed a 9-8 triple overtime victory over Bellarmine in the 2022 season opener behind four goals from O'Grady in his NCAA debut. O'Grady scored the game winner at the 2:55 mark of the third overtime period.
- Cowan made his first start of the season for MU.
