Filipinas making debut in global tournament
Former Marquette University women's soccer player Ryley Bugay (West Lafayette, Ind./William Henry Harrison HS) is set to begin play at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup as a member of the Philippines Women's National Team.
Bugay is the first player in program history to earn a roster spot in the FIFA Women's World Cup and is a member of a squad that earned Philippines its first-ever appearance in the tournament. The Filipinas claimed the historic spot with a strong performance at the 2022 AFC Asian Women's Cup. Bugay made her debut with the team at the same event in 2018.
Bugay recently completed her first year of medical school at the Indiana University School of Medicine-Evansville.
"Ryley's story is one of determination and making herself better when no one is looking," Marquette head coach Frank Pelaez said. "She has a tremendous love for the game and we wish her and the team the best of luck."
Pelaez, a native of Cartagena, Columbia, will also be supporting his home country's team, which opens play July 24 against Korea Republic.
The Filipinas open play July 21 against Switzerland and will also face host New Zealand (July 25) and Norway (July 30) in group play.
Bugay played in 71 career matches for the Golden Eagles from 2015-18 after redshirting as a true freshman. She made 53 starting assignments and concluded her career with one goal (penalty kick) and an assist. She played one season at Marquette with her sister, Sammi, who recently graduated from the university as well.
