Golden Eagles continue road swing Sept. 19 at Milwaukee
The No. 13 Marquette University men's soccer team (6-1-0, 0-1-0 BIG EAST) opened BIG EAST Conference play with a 2-1 loss at Creighton (2-3-2, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) Friday night.
The Golden Eagles, who won each of their first six matches of the season at home, were playing on the road for the first time in 2023. Marquette, which entered the night with a national-best 19 goals, had also only allowed four scores in the team's first six outings.
Defender Kyle Bebej scored his first-career goal in the 59th minute, perfectly placing a shot from distance into the upper left corner of the net. The score came just minutes after Bebej cleared a point-blank shot off the line at the far post to keep Creighton from scoring its third goal.
Marquette fell behind 2-0 midway through the first half after the Bluejays found the back of the net twice in less than five minutes. Creighton peppered MU netminder Ludvig Malberg, who finished with three saves on eight shots in the opening 45 minutes.
Creighton finished with a 14-6 advantage in shots, but each of Marquette's six was on goal. The Golden Eagles had multiple chances in the closing minutes, but the best opportunities ended up right at Creighton netminder Blake Gillingham.
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at Milwaukee to continue a three-match road swing.
