Tennis Program Competes at Drake and Minnesota

MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's and women's tennis teams completed their respective opening weekends of the 2023-24 campaign with action at two events.

The men's roster traveled to the Drake Invitational and the women's team participated in the Gopher Invite, hosted by Minnesota.

"We learned a lot about where we are at coming off the off season," interim director of tennis Jud Shaufler said. "We have things to work on, but we showed we have plenty of good things to work off of."

At the Drake Invite, the pairings of Jan Jauch/Blake Roegner, Tin Krstulovic/Nathan Balthazor, and Ivan Vazquez/Teddy Wong competed in doubles action for the men's team. The duo of Krstulovic and Balthazor picked an opening round 6-3 victory but fell short in the next round.

In singles action Jauch led the Golden Eagles with a 5-3 overall record on the weekend. Roegner had the second best showing in singles action with a 4-3 record on the weekend.

Highlights for the women's team at Minnesota included duo newcomers Emma-Jane Barclay/Tiera Jarmond picking up their first wins as Golden Eagles in doubles action.

The Golden Eagles claimed a total of 10 wins in singles action on the weekend. Senior Lara Kaiser led MU in singles action with a 4-1 weekend record at the Gopher Invite.

Senior Andie Weise returned to action for the Golden Eagles this weekend after spending the majority of last season recovering from an injury.

UP NEXT

Both teams will be participating in the Milwaukee Tennis Classic Sept. 22-24, with the men's team playing at the Milwaukee Country Club and women's team playing at the Western Racquet Club. Action for the MTC will begin on Friday Sept. 22, at 9:00 a.m. CT.

The men's team will also send players to Toledo, Ohio for the Toledo Invite Sept. 22-24.
