Golden Eagles back in action Monday against NIU
Â
MILWAUKEE  – The Marquette University men's soccer team (7-2-1, 1-2-0 BIG EAST) fell to St. John's (5-3-1, 1-1-1 BIG EAST ) 1-0 on Friday evening at Valley Fields.
Â
"We created opportunities but couldn't finish in front of the goal," head coach Louis Bennett said. "We didn't execute well in the second half, we were too focus on trying to score and not relying on our training regime."
Â
Both squads started the game off tactically trying to figure each other's defenses out, Marquette started the match with two quality looks but both shots from Brooklyn Merl and Edrey Caceres were off target.
Â
The Red Storm found the net late in the 39th minute after Nicholas Fleuriau Chateau snuck a home ball past MU's back line from inside the box. The late first half goal, which served as the game winning goal, gave St. John's a 1-0 advantage going into halftime.
Â
Both teams came out of the locker rooms and played a physical brand of soccer. The physicality between the two squads resulted in two red cards and one yellow card for the Red Storm and two yellow cards for the Golden Eagles.
Â
Marquette first shot on goal came in the 56th minute after the Red Storm were booked for their second red card of the night playing with two men down.
Â
With St. John's down two players for majority of the second half, Marquette tallied 17 shots and 13 corner kicks but could not find the back of the net.
Â
"It's a beautifully cruel game sometimes," head coach Louis Bennett said. "I'm sure that everyone in our locker room is disappointed, so we will get back to work tomorrow and look to bounce back Monday."
Â
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles continue a three-match homestand on Monday, October 2 as the team host NIU for a 7:05 p.m. CT matchup at Valley Fields.
