Series With Butler Spans Program History
The all-time series dates back to the 1922-23 campaign and Marquette now owns a slim 25-24 advantage.
MU claimed the first-ever meeting, 18-17, on Dec. 16, 1922, only to see the Bulldogs claim the next nine matchups. Marquette also collected a nine-game win streak between 1942 and 1990, with the last two contests during that run coming when both programs were members of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference.
Following Marquette's move to the Great Midwest Conference in 1991-92, the two teams wouldn't meet until Butler beat the Golden Eagles at the buzzer in the opening game of the 2012 Maui Invitational. MU would return the favor in the 2013 NCAA tournament, downing the Bulldogs 74-72 in the closing seconds to earn a trip to the squad's third-straight Sweet 16.
The Golden Eagles swept the season series in 2022-23, most recent claiming a 72-56 win on Feb. 28, 2023 in Hinkle Fieldhouse to claim the BIG EAST Conference regular season title. Guard Tyler Kolek led the way with a double-double in that outing, finishing with 21 points and 10 assists.
Ighodaro's Offensive Effort Not Enough At SHU
Senior forward Oso Ighodaro matched a career-scoring high at Seton Hall on Saturday, but it wasn't enough in the 78-75 setback.
The Chandler, Arizona, native finished with 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field and also chipped in eight rebounds (four offensive), three assists, three steals and a pair of blocks in 36 minutes of action.
Ighodaro has 13 offensive rebounds in the last two outings after totaling 33 caroms at that end in the first 13 contest of the campaign.
Marquette Enjoying Extended Home Success
Dating back to last season, Marquette is in possession of a 19-game overall winning streak at Fiserv Forum, which is currently tied for the second-longest active streak in the country through games of Jan. 7.
The Golden Eagles claimed their final 11 home games in 2022-23 (16-1 overall) and are 8-0 to start this season.
MU's 16 home victories last year were the second most (17-0 in 1977-78) in program history and the team's current 20-game homecourt winning streak in BIG EAST action dating back to 2021-22 is tied for the longest in league history (20 - Marquette - 2012-14, Notre Dame - 2006-09, Pittsburgh - 2002-04).
Only Colgate (23) and Vermont (22) are in possession of active winning streaks in league action through games of Jan. 7.
Marquette last fell at Fiserv Forum in BIG EAST Conference action on Jan. 1, 2022 in a 75-69 double-overtime loss to Creighton.
Under head coach Shaka Smart, the team is a combined 37-4 at home (includes win at Al McGuire Center in 2022-23).
