Series With Butler Spans Program History
The all-time series dates back to the 1922-23 campaign and following Butler's win at Fiserv Forum on Jan. 10 it's now tied at 25-25.
MU claimed the first-ever meeting, 18-17, on Dec. 16, 1922, only to see the Bulldogs claim the next nine matchups. Marquette also collected a nine-game win streak between 1942 and 1990, with the last two contests during that run coming when both programs were members of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference.
Following Marquette's move to the Great Midwest Conference in 1991-92, the two teams wouldn't meet until Butler beat the Golden Eagles at the buzzer in the opening game of the 2012 Maui Invitational. MU would return the favor in the 2013 NCAA tournament, downing the Bulldogs 74-72 in the closing seconds to earn a trip to the squad's third-straight Sweet 16.
Guard Kam Jones led three players in double figures with 20 points in the first meeting this season, but MU shot just 32.9 percent from the floor, including a 5-of-31 effort from behind the 3-point line.
MU Looking To Continue Road Success
When Marquette travels to No. 1/1 UConn on Saturday, the game will conclude a run of 6-of-8 outings on the road for the Golden Eagles.
In the last five years, only Marquette and Providence have had such a stretch in league play and both were this season. The Friars wrapped up their road swing on Feb. 4.
Marquette, which has played just twice at Fiserv Forum in nearly a month, has claimed each of the four road games since Jan. 20.
Kolek Claims Weekly BIG EAST Honor
Senior guard Tyler Kolek finished with 27 points, 13 assists and seven rebounds in the win over St. John's and as a result earned BIG EAST Player of the Week accolades on Monday.
The honor is Kolek's second (Dec. 11) of the season and fourth of his career.
Kolek is just the third player in NCAA Division I in nearly 20 years to reach his totals versus the Red Storm in points, assists and rebounds in a non-overtime game. John Konchar (IPFW) finished with 29 points, 14 assists and seven rebounds on Feb. 14, 2019 against Denver and East Tennessee State's Courtney Pigram chipped in 29 points, 18 assists and eight rebounds versus Mercer on Feb. 24, 2007.
Kolek, who leads all of NCAA Division I in assists (630) since 2021-22 and is currently second in the nation (7.5 apg.) through games of Feb. 11, moved into sole possession of third place all-time at Marquette with his 13 helpers against St. John's, picking up his fifth double-double of the campaign in the process.
