
Lyons and Schmidtke under par on day two of Puerto Rico Classic

Lyons is tied for 20th individually at 6-under through 36 holes

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – Junior Max Lyons and freshman Mason Schmidtke each posted 1-under 71s in Monday's second round of the 2024 Puerto Rico Classic at Grand Reserve Golf Club.
Lyons, who shot a 5-under 67 in the opening round on Sunday and was tied for fifth through 18 holes, got out to another fast start on Monday morning. The native of Phoenix, Arizona recorded birdies on his first two holes, the par-4 12th and 13th, and was four under through the day's first eight. He recorded bogeys on four of his final 10 holes to finish the day with a 1-under 71.
Schmidtke carded an idential score on Monday with three birdies offsetting a pair of bogeys. The native of Sheboygan, Wisconsin recorded consecutive bogeys on the par-4 third and fourth holes, but closed the day with birdies on the par-4 ninth and par-3 11th.
Lyons' opening round 67 is the lowest score he has recorded this season and his lowest since a 6-under 65 in the opening round of the 2023 Valspar Collegiate on March 27 of last spring at the Floridian Golf Club in Palm City, Florida.
Graduate student Josh Robinson is second on the team with a 2-under 142 (69-73) and is tied for 51st overall. Robinson posted a clean card on Sunday with three birdies and zero holes over par.
The University of Georgia overtook North Florida on Monday for the event lead with a combined 20-under 268. UGA (-33) now leads the event by two strokes over UNF (-31). Purdue's Nels Surtani (12-under) shot a 7-under 65 on Monday to overtake the day one leader Noah Kent of Iowa by a single stroke.

The 2024 campaign marks the sixth year in a row that the Golden Eagles are competing in the Puerto Rico Classic and the third time they've played at Grand Reserve in as many years. Last season, Marquette recorded a 1-over par 865 (292-285-288) to place 11th and was led by Josh Robinson's 6-under par 210 in a tie for 14th place individually.
The event, hosted by Purdue, began in 1993 and is in its 31st iteration this spring. Former MU All-American Hunter Eichhorn holds the tournament's single-round scoring record with the 11-under 61 he shot in the third round of the event in 2022.
