MILWAUKEE – Jake Stegman broke both the Marquette University career and single-game assist records on Tuesday afternoon in a 22-8 victory over Detroit Mercy at Valley Fields.
"I'm just really proud of all our guys," MU head coach Andrew Stimmel said. "What we talked about last week leading into this week was a race to improve. We want to be the best team in the country at getting better. A credit to our entire team - every single guy. I thought our staff did a great job this week. It is a lot to play three games in 10 days – advance scouting and preparation."
Stegman started on attack for the Golden Eagles (2-0) and recorded seven points on a goal and MU-record six assists. His first helper of the day came on the game's first goal to Bobby O'Grady and Stegman used three early second quarter assists to tie and break Conor Gately's MU career record of 63. Stegman ended the day with his sixth and final assist on O'Grady's fifth goal with 4:15 remaining in the third quarter as MU jumped ahead 16-4.
"Jake is an incredible leader who sets an edge for us with how we practice and how we prepare, work and develop," Stimmel said. "He's been an absolute godsend to creating the culture that we are still continuing to grow. You look at his career and how hard he has worked to put himself in this position. Today getting to start on attack and notching a single-game record with six assists and then setting the program-record. I'm incredibly happy for him. He's someone who cares about winning but I'm happy for him to pass someone like Conor Gately, who is an all-time great at Marquette."
In addition to O'Grady's season-high five goals, MU redshirt junior Luke Blanc notched a career-best four goals for his third hat trick in as many games to open the year. Sophomore Andrew Bowman started in Stegman's spot in the midfield with Cowan out and recorded his first hat trick of the season and second of his career.
Marquette goalie Caleb Creasor made seven saves in 41:26 of game action, while redshirt junior Jamie Grant made five stops in the final 11:03 of regulation.
The Titans (0-1) pulled ahead 3-2 late in the opening quarter on ASUN All-Preseason Team midfielder Luke Majick's first goal. MU midfielder Will Foster tied the game a minute later as the Golden Eagles began the start of a 14-1 run that spanned the half.
The Golden Eagles put on a dominant showing at the faceoff dot with Luke Williams winning 10-of-12 draws with six ground balls, while redshirt freshman Adam Slager won 9-of-12 with four ground balls.

NOTABLE:
- Marquette is 10-1 all-time against UDM and has won each of the last four meetings.
- Detroit is MU's third-straight ASUN opponent to open the year (MU's other two wins are against Air Force and Lindenwood). MU will play a total of five games this season against ASUN members (ASUN favorite Utah on March 2 and at Bellarmine on March 9 are the other two contests).
- MU is 4-1 at home against the Titans, including a win in the first home game in program history on April 20, 2013, at Hart Park in nearby Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.
- MU's 22 goals are one off the program record of 23 scored in a win at St. John's on April 9, 2022.
- O'Grady has 97 career goals and is within striking distance of Ryan McNamara's program record of 102.
- Tuesday marked O'Grady's 16th career hat trick and the seventh time in 32 career games that the native of Milton, Mass., has reached five scores.
- Stegman now has 66 career assists. His 63rd and tying assist came to Blanc at the 7:12 mark of the second quarter and he broke Gately's mark on another Blanc score with 3:37 left in the first half.
- In his last 17 games played, spanning 2023 and the first three games of 2024, Stegman has recorded 41 assists. That number itself would rank fourth in MU career history.
- Stegman's new single-game assist record of six breaks the previous mark of five he held with Gately and Kyran Clarke.
- Two-time reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Week Carsen Brandt posted two points on a goal and assist. His 10 points (6g, 4a) through three games are the most ever for a Marquette freshman through three career contests.
