Four newcomers make Golden Eagles debut
MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota - The Marquette University women's tennis team picked up a total of 14 singles wins and nine doubles victories in its fall campaign debut at the 2024 Gopher Invitational.
In singles play, Andie Weise, Emma-Jane Barclay, Tiera Jarmond, Luciana Mendoza, Joelle Fiallo Schad, Elena Duva, and Aiyana Abbott all picked up two singles in their respective draws. All of the Golden Eagles newcomers (Abbott, Mendoza, Duva, Fiallo Schad) picked up their first wins on the opening day of competition.
In doubles competition, MU was led by the play of Weise and Jarmond, the duo picked up three doubles wins including a 6-4 victory over Minnesota. Aiyana Abbott and Emma Davis racked up two wins on the final day in doubles play with victories over Omaha and Northern Illinois.
"I was very pleased with our performance, our four freshmen went 4-0 in their singles matches on both Friday and Sunday," director of tennis, Jud Shaufler said. "Our upper-class players knocked out a few wins in our opening weekend. We learned a ton and I was very satisfied with the competitive fire that everyone showed."
