Golden Eagles off to 2-0 BIG EAST start, best since 2013
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's soccer team (6-3-1, 2-0-0 BIG EAST) tied its best BIG EAST start since 2013 with a 2-0 victory over Butler (3-5-2, 0-2-0 BIG EAST) Saturday evening in its BIG EAST home opener.
In the first fifteen minutes the Golden Eagles recorded two quality looks from Kyle Bebej and Justin Milanov but were unable to find the back of the net.
In the 20th minute Abdoul Karim Pare was fouled in the box which resulted in a penalty kick. Mitar Mitrovic netted the PK to put the Golden Eagles ahead 1-0.
At halftime Marquette lead Butler 1-0 on their lone goal from Mitrovic. The Golden Eagles out-shot the Bulldogs 6-4 in the first half of play.
In the 52nd minute Gabe Anguil dispossessed a Butler defender just outside of their box and found the back of the net to extend Marquette's lead to 2-0.
"Really proud of our collective effort, we thought we did a really good job in preparation for tonight's game throughout the week and we think it showed," head coach David Korn said. "Our guys fought all night and played with passion for 90 minutes. I thought our defensive effort was great and made it tough for Butler the entire match."
Marquette kept the pressure on the Bulldogs through the remaining of the match, in the 75th minute Milanov gave the Golden Eagles two great chances at goal, finding the crossbar on one, but was unable to find the back of the net.
