Golden Eagles wrap up road portion of non-conference schedule
The Marquette University women's soccer team (1-4-1, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) hits the road to face No. 9 Notre Dame (4-1-0, 0-0-0 ACC) in the squad's final non-conference road match of the campaign.
Following Sunday's outing, the Golden Eagles will host three-straight non-league contests before opening BIG EAST Conference action at Butler on Sept. 22.
Lineup Featuring New Faces
Through the first six matches of the season, 20 different players have earned at least one starting assignment and of that group, 11 have made their respective first-ever starts for Marquette (multiple collegiate debuts).
Just five players - Emily Fix, Tess O'Connell, Adrianna Alberts, Kiara Clarke and Mia Haertle have started all six matches.
Injuries have also been a factor in lineup combinations, with nine players missing at least one match, including a pair (Ruhland, Downs) who are done for the season.
Fix, Bieda Find Back Of The Net
Sophomore Emily Fix knocked home the game winner at the 87:58 mark against UIC in the team's 1-0 win, her first score since Sept. 17, 2023 in a 1-1 draw with St. Thomas.
Junior Josie Bieda also netted her first goal of the campaign against Minnesota, opening the scoring with a strike from 12 yards out just inside the near post. Bieda now owns five-career scores, second only to Kate Gibson (7).
Gibson Hero In Hometown Draw
Kansas City native Kate Gibson headed home an Alexa Maletis corner kick with 12 seconds left in regulation to allow Marquette to rally for a 1-1 draw against Kansas City on Aug. 18 at Valley Fields.
Playing in her 51st career game for MU, the St. Teresa's Academy product netted her first goal since scoring on Sept. 21, 2023 versus DePaul in a 2-1 victory.
Allen Makes Debut As Head Coach
The season opener marked the head-coaching debut for Chris Allen, who is in his first year with the Golden Eagles after an eight-year run on the staff at Saint Louis.
Allen helped guide SLU to a 131-30-11 overall record, five Atlantic 10 Conference regular-season championships (67-6-5 record in A-10), six A-10 tournament titles and six-straight NCAA Championship appearances.
During his tenure, Allen coached five All-America selections, 15 all-region honorees and 25 all-conference team members. A total of 10 players claimed an A-10 player of the year award (offensive, defensive, goalkeeper, rookie).
MU Honors Dr. Lovell In 2024
The Marquette women's soccer team, and all programs at MU, will honor former president Dr. Michael R. Lovell this season by wearing patches on its uniforms in 2024-25.
Dr. Lovell passed away in June after a courageous battle with cancer and was a tremendous ambassador for the university and greater Milwaukee community.
Dr. Lovell served at MU for 10 years and was a strong supporter of all the student-athletes at the university and a familiar face in the crowd at hundreds of competitions.
MU-UND Series Dates To 1988
The Golden Eagles are 5-9-1 all-time against Notre Dame, with a majority of the outings coming while both programs were members of the BIG EAST Conference.
Prior to a matchup in 2022 (UND won 3-0), the teams most recently met in the 2012 BIG EAST Tournament semifinals, with MU claiming a 1-0 victory.
