The No. 18/16 Marquette University men's basketball team (18-6, 9-4 BIG EAST) opens a two-game homestand on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. CT in Fiserv Forum when the squad hosts DePaul (11-13, 2-11 BIG EAST) in league action. Peacock features the broadcast, with John Fanta (play-by-play) and former Marquette head coach Tom Crean (analyst) calling the action. Following Tuesday's outing, the Golden Eagles will have a week to prepare for Seton Hall on Feb. 18.
Series With DePaul Spans Program History
Marquette's all-time series with DePaul dates back to the 1917-18 season (second year of MU's varsity history) and includes 136 previous meetings, the highest total against any single opponent in team history.
The Golden Eagles own an 86-50 advantage in the series and the extensive series history has been aided by the fact the two programs have been in the same league dating back to the 1991-92 campaign. Since that season, the teams have shared affiliation in the Great Midwest Conference, Conference USA and BIG EAST.
The Golden Eagles have won seven of the last eight contests, including an 85-83 overtime win at DePaul on Jan. 14. David Joplin scored a career-high 30 points in the victory and all of the team's 85 points were scored by the starters.
Jones Finds Form In Latest Outing
Senior guard Kam Jones led all scorers with 27 points on Saturday at Creighton, featuring the efficiency and playmaking that makes him one of the top guards in the country.
The Memphis native finished 11-of-19 from the floor and also chipped in six assists and four rebounds in 37 minutes of action and turned the ball over on just one occasion.
Jones' 27 points were his most in BIG EAST play this season and highest total since he netted 32 points in the Dec. 7 win over Wisconsin at Fiserv Forum. He now owns 11 career efforts of 25-or-more points, including four in 2024-25.
Continuity Is Key To Recent Success
Since the 2022-23 campaign, Marquette is the only power conference team that hasn't signed a NCAA Division I transfer, leading to as consistent a starting lineup as any program in the country.
Through games of Feb. 9, Marquette is one of just four squads (Manhattan, UC-San Diego and St. Mary's) to feature the same starting lineup (Jones, Mitchell, Joplin, Ross, Gold). Two years ago, Marquette and Marshall were the only two teams in the country to utilize the same starting five the entire season.
Since the opening contest of the 2022-23 campaign (Kolek, Ighodaro, Prosper, Mitchell, Jones), just eight different players have started a game for MU, the lowest total in all of NCAA Division I. Of the eight, the three players (Kolek, Ighodaro, Prosper) currently not starting for the team are competing in the NBA.
Joplin, who hasn't missed an outing in his 129-game career, has a chance to pass Lazar Hayward (138) for most career appearances. Jones and Mitchell will also finish in the top-10 this season and junior Chase Ross might have a shot at the top spot in 2025-26.
Mitchell Named Candidate For DPOY Award
Marquette University senior guard Stevie Mitchell has been named to the Naismith Men's Defensive Player of the Year Presented by Molecule Watch List, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced on Feb. 5.
The Reading, Pennsylvania native is one of 17 players on the list, which includes nine guards and two other players (Ryan Kalkbrenner and Kadary Richmond) from the BIG EAST Conference.
Through games of Feb. 9, Mitchell is ranked first in the BIG EAST and fifth in the country in steals per game (2.7) and moved into fourth all-time at Marquette in thefts (208). In league action, he is averaging 3.0 steals per contest, also the best mark in the BIG EAST.
Mitchell is second on the team in deflections (174), averaging 7.3 per game.
Parham Making Most Of Extended Minutes
Freshman forward Royce Parham has played 20-or-more minutes in each of the last three games after surpassing that total on just two occasions in the first 21 outings of the campaign.
One game after chipping in eight points off the bench at St. John's, Parham grabbed a career-best seven rebounds, three at the offensive end, in 23 minutes of action at Creighton.
In the last three outings, he is contributing 5.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per game while shooting 6-of-11 from the floor and 3-of-7 from long distance.
