WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana – The Marquette University men's golf team claimed its fourth team title of the season with a 1-under par final round on Easter Sunday to finish 16-under in the Boilermaker Invitational at Ackerman-Allen Golf Course.
The Golden Eagles trailed tournament-host Purdue by four strokes entering Sunday and picked up six strokes on the Boilermakers to clear the them by two. No. 12 Illinois and Michigan State tied for third at 10-under, while Notre Dame and Indiana tied for fifth at 9-under.
Seniors Patrick Adler and Max Lyons led the Golden Eagles on Sunday with 1-under 70s, while freshman Vincent Cervantes carded an even-par 71 in his final round. Johan Widal and Mason Schmidtke each notched a team-best five birdies on Sunday but finished with 1-over 72s.
Adler entered the day tied for the individual lead at 7-under, but was passed by Michigan's Hunter Thomson for medalist honors. Adler, who was aiming for his third individual crown this season, tied with Jackson Buchanan of Illinois for third at 8-under.
The Golden Eagles led the field with 57 birdies over the weekend and ranked first in par-3 scoring (3.05; +3) and second in par-4 scoring (4.01; +2). Adler's 7-under mark on par-5 holes allowed him to record his third top-three finish of the season and place him inside the top-20 in an event for the first time this spring.
Adler recorded three rounds under par for the first time since winning the Windon Memorial Classic (Sept. 29-30) and RedHawk Intercollegiate (Oct. 14-15) consecutively during the fall season.
The Golden Eagles entered the weekend No. 50 in Scoreboard's NCAA Division I Men's College Golf Ranking and topped three teams ranked above them in Illinois (No. 11), Purdue (No. 37) and Notre Dame (No. 38). Michigan State, Michigan, Indiana, Iowa, Miami (Ohio) are also in the top-100 nationally.
Marquette begins postseason action on April 26-28 in the BIG EAST Conference Men's Golf Championship at Callawassie Island Club in Okatie, South Carolina.
