OKATIE, South Carolina – The Marquette University men's golf team shot an 8-under 280 on Sunday to take a five-stroke team lead in the 2025 BIG EAST Conference Men's Golf Championships at Callawassie Island.
The Golden Eagles lead Xavier, which was the only other squad under par on Sunday, by five strokes and Butler by 10. MU entered the day knotted with Butler on the team leaderboard, but the Bulldogs shot a 2-over 290 on Sunday as Marquette jumped ahead. All five MU golfers are in the top 16 of the individual standings.
Senior Max Lyons rallied from a difficult opening round for Sunday's second-best individual score, a 5-under 67, which included six birdies. He's back at even-par for the event (77-67—144) and looks to move up from his current position, a tie for 12th, to record a new personal best finish at the conference championship.
Junior Johan Widal posted Marquette's best second round, a 3-under 69, and is MU's top golfer at the event in third place at 4-under (71-69—140). He is the only MU golfer to shoot under par in each round and posted five birdies apiece on Saturday and Sunday.
MU sophomore Mason Schmidtke shot a 5-under 67 to lead the field following Saturday's opening round, but fell back into a tie for ninth late on Sunday with a 4-over 76. Schmidtke was 2-under through 12 holes but posted bogeys on Nos. 13 and 17 before a quadruple on the par-4 18th hole. Schmidtke entered the day one stroke ahead of Butler's Derek Tabor, who shot a 4-under 68 on Saturday. Tabor shot a 3-over 75 on Sunday and is currently tied with Schmidtke.
UConn's Alex Heard (6-under 66) fired the only second round better than Lyons and has the individual lead at 7-under for the event.
The tournament at Callawassie Island uses the Magnolia Course as the front nine and the Dogwood course for the back nine. This is the seventh year the club has hosted the tournament and MU has won three conference championships at the venue.
