KANNAPOLIS, North Carolina — The Marquette University men's golf team is four strokes behind tournament-leader Morehead State following Monday's opening round of the Irish Creek Collegiate at The Club at Irish Creek.
The 15 competing squads played just 18 holes due to weather on Monday and the event will feature 36 holes including Tuesday's final round, which begins with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. Central time.
MU senior Max Lyons shot a 1-under 69 on Monday and is tied for third to lead the Golden Eagles, who posted a combined 4-over 284.
Lyons recorded a team-best four birdies on Monday and is the lone Golden Eagle under par through 18 holes. The native of Phoenix, Arizona is coming off the two best finishes of his collegiate career over the past month at Sea Island (third) and the Wigwam Gold Course (second) on March 17-18 and 24-25, respectively. Eight of the nine rounds he has carded this spring have been under par.
Lyons is tied with three other golfers in third and is just two strokes off the pace of 3-under (67) recorded by Layne Lambert of Charleston Southern.
MU sophomore Mason Schmidtke is competing as part of Marquette's lineup for the first time this season and is one of four individuals tied for 16th with a 1-over 71.
The native of Sheboygan, Wisconsin entered the week with a 71.71 first round scoring average this season, second only to Lyons' mark of 71.13 on MU.
The tournament is a play-six, count-four team event.
