
Cervantes Shoots Marquette Regional Record 67 in Second Round at Illinois

URBANA, Illinois – Marquette University freshman Vincent Cervantes fired a program-record 4-under 67 in Tuesday's second round of the NCAA Urbana Regional at Atkins Golf Club and is three strokes off the individual lead.
Cervantes is eighth on the leaderboard with a 4-under 138 (71-67) and the Golden Eagles are sixth as a team at 4-over 572 (285-287).
The top five teams from each regional advance to the NCAA Championships later this month and MU enters Wednesday's final round five strokes behind Troy (1-under) for the fifth spot. MU and Troy are paired with Texas Tech on Wednesday and the Red Raiders (2-under) are just one stroke ahead of the Trojans in fourth. The three squads will begin the third round on No. 10, beginning with each team's No. 5 golfer at 8:33 a.m. Central time.
Cervantes posted a team-best six birdies on Tuesday and bettered the previous MU single-round record score (68) posted by teammate Patrick Adler on Monday and Brandon Cloete in the 2015 NCAA Noblesville Regional. The BIG EAST Conference Freshman of the Year posted three birdies on both the front and back nines and narrowly missed birdie putts on Nos. 8 and 9 to close the day.
Junior Johan Widal and sophomore Mason Schmidtke each posted identical 2-over 73s on Tuesday, while seniors Adler and Max Lyons were 3-over (74).
