WBB Puts On Defensive Display In 67-49 Win Over Creighton

MILWAUKEE – Holding Creighton to a combined nine points between the first and third quarters, Marquette (11-5, 5-2 BIG EAST) held the Bluejays to season-low 49 points in a 67-49 win on Thursday night at the Al McGuire Center. CU shot just 30.0% from the field field and had 15 turnovers.

Olivia Porter led the Golden Eagles in scoring for the first time this season as the senior dropped a career-best 23 points, knocking down a career-high five 3-pointers (5-of-10). The senior entered the night without a made 3 in her last three games.

Marquette's defense was stifling to start the game, holding Creighton to 1-of-7 from the field while also forcing four turnovers through the opening five minutes. The Golden Eagles led 8-2. An 8-0 stretch around the quarter break, though, saw Creighton grab its first lead of the game with a triple from the top of the key just before three minutes had passed in the second quarter. Jaidynn Mason then sank a jumper inside the arc with the shot clock expiring to retake the lead for MU but the Bluejays' third straight bucket put CU back up 14-13.

Back-and-forth for the next three minutes, Porter gave the Golden Eagles a 29-24 advantage at the half, scoring Marquette's final eight points of the second.

After holding CU to just seven points in first quarter, Marquette ramped up its defense coming out of the locker room. The Bluejays missed their first five attempts of the period before getting on the board in the third. It would be their last as they finished 1-of-13 from the field in the quarter. MU closed the period on an 11-0 run with the final two points coming at the free-throw line. A steal in the final seconds by Porter led to a fast break in which the senior was fouled on the drive with 0.4 seconds on the clock. The pair at the stripe gave the Golden Eagles a 44-26 edge.

Capped by Porter's final points of the quarter, Marquette's eight points in the final two minutes of the third all but put the game on ice despite there still being 10 minutes to play.

Creighton shot 5-of-10 from the field in the fourth, and 11-of-12 from the free-throw line, but its 23 points were matched in the quarter by Marquette.
