MSOC Opens BIG EAST Play At No. 9 Georgetown

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's soccer (5-1-1) begins BIG EAST play on Friday, traveling to Washington, D.C., to face No. 9 Georgetown (5-1-1) at Shaw Field. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. CT and will stream on ESPN+.

The Golden Eagles are just 2-16-3 all-time against the Hoyas, and 0-10-1 at Georgetown. Marquette's two victories came in Milwaukee in 2009 and 2021.

Friday will begin a stretch of three matches in eight days for the Golden Eagles. MU will face two ranked opponents in the stretch with No. 9 Georgetown on Friday and No. 14 Creighton on Sept. 26.

BACK IN THE NATIONAL CONVERSATION
Marquette received four votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll on Sept. 15, marking the program's first appearance in the national poll's receiving votes category since Sept. 24, 2023.

The Golden Eagles opened the 2023 campaign 6-0-0 and spent multiple weeks in the Top 25 before finishing 7-6-3.

RANKED TEST
Friday marks Marquette's second match against a nationally ranked foe this season after facing No. 23 Wisconsin on Aug. 31 (L, 1-3).

Georgetown is the highest-ranked opponent on the 2026 schedule to date at No. 9 in the latest coaches poll.
It is MU's highest-ranked opponent since Sept. 9 (No. 9 Northwestern, L, 0-1).

HISTORY AGAINST TOP-10 OPPONENTS
Marquette's last win over a top-10 opponent was a 1-0 victory over No. 1 Georgetown on Oct. 30, 2021 at Valley Fields. It was the Golden Eagles' only win over a No. 1 team in program history.

Marquette is 5-25-7 against top-10 opponents all-time and is seeking its first top-10 road victory since defeating No. 9 Michigan in 2013.

KORN'S BEST START
At 5-1-1, the Golden Eagles are off to the best seven-match start of the David Korn era, and already have as many wins as they recorded through the first 13 matches of 2024.

Korn's team's finished with six wins in 2024 and seven in 2025.
The 5-1-1 record is the program's second best start in the last decade.

MAKING THE MOST OF THEIR CHANCES
Marquette has scored 17 goals on just 61 shots, converting 27.9% of its attempts, the top conversion rate in the country.

Tomiwa Adewumi alone has scored on 53.3% of his shots (8-of-15).
The Golden Eagles have scored on 53.1% of their shots on goal (17 goals on 32 SOG), the third-highest rate in the NCAA.
MU's 17 goals ranks 13th nationally.

SCORING TRIO
Three Marquette players have at least three goals: Tomiwa Adewumi (8), Mads Konrad Horgøien (4), Joey Buchanan (3). The trio accounts for 15 of MU's 17 goals.

Adewumi, Horgøien and Buchanan have combined for 15 goals, more than all seven Marquette opponents combined in five of MU's seven matches.

SECOND-HALF SURGE
Marquette has outscored opponents 11-4 in the second half compared to an even 6-6 in the first half.

Tomiwa Adewumi's hat trick against Southern Indiana came in the final 22 minutes and erased a pair of one-goal deficits.

ADEWUMI CHASING RARE AIR
With a first name that means "God brought me here" and a last name that translates to "I desire the crown" or "royalty attracts me", it is no surprise that Oluwatomiwa Adewumi, better known as Tomiwa or Tom is in search of rarefied air at Marquette as he enters BIG EAST play with eight goals through seven matches. The eight goals is already the most by a Marquette player since Luka Prpa scored 10 in 2016.

Adewumi needs just two more goals to become the program's first double-digit goal scorer since Prpa in 2016.
His 1.14 goals per game currently exceeds the single-season pace set by every Marquette player since 1979.
His 17 points have already matched Lukas Sunesson's total from the 2022 season. The last decade has seen Luka Prpa total with an 18-point campaign in 2018 and 26-point campaign in 2016.

FASTEST TO EIGHT
Adewumi's eight goals in seven career matches are the most by a Marquette freshman since at least the beginning of the BIG EAST era.
