HOUSTON, Texas - The Marquette women?s soccer team stumbled to 2-4-1 this afternoon with a 1-0 overtime loss at Houston. For the second consecutive season, the Cougars came into the Marquette contest with a poor overall record but escape with a one-goal victory, this year courtesy of Kristen Hogan?s game winning goal during the extra time.
?Overall, we actually played a good game, but we made that one mistake and (Houston) took advantage of it,? head coach Markus Roeders said. ?It?s hard to say why. It was hot, but I don?t think the heat was a factor. I think the Saint Louis game the other night may have played some part. We were emotionally drained after that game and didn?t have that extra spark today.?
Just four minutes into the overtime session, the Golden Eagles had a strong scoring opportunity off a corner, but the ball was cleared off the line. On the ensuing Cougar rush, Marquette had seemingly cleared the ball. However, the clearing pass was intercepted and Houston earned an odd-man rush on the Marquette net. Hogan tallied the game-winner off the counter attack at the 93:39 mark.
?Houston battled hard they entire game,? Roeders said. ?We probably had some better scoring opportunities than they did, but we played into their game plan too often and weren?t able to generate enough quality scoring chances.?
After netting eight goals in a win over UW-Green Bay a week ago, the Golden Eagles could muster only one goal in the opening weekend of Conference USA action. And despite another strong outing from keeper Mo Bothwell, Marquette is still searching for its first road win of 1999. The loss drops Marquette?s record to 2-4-1, 0-1-1, while Houston improves to 3-5-0, 2-0-0 with the win.
?We worked hard again this afternoon,? Roeders said. ?And that is what is especially frustrating: the players aren?t getting the results from all the hard work they are putting in.?
The Golden Eagles return home for a non-conference showdown with crosstown rival UW-Milwaukee on Tue., Sept. 21. Marquette and UWM are scheduled for a 7 p.m. (CT) kick-off at Milwaukee?s Uihlein Soccer Park.
