Women's Soccer Falls To Illinois
9/7/1999 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Illinois' Emily Brown netted a goal in only the game's seventh minute and the Fighting Illini never looked back in handing the Marquette women's soccer team a season-opening loss tonight at the Illinois Soccer Field. The Golden Eagles could not counter two first-half Illini scores and fall to 0-1.
"We had a poor first half," Marquette head coach Markus Roeders said. "We were timid, not aggressive. We let a stupid goal in early and hd to play catch-up. Overall, we just didn't play well."
Brown's goal was followed by a second Illinois goal at the 31:22 mark when striker Lisa Baldwin converted from the left side of the box off a pass from Lindsay Johnson. Brown and Baldwin each paced the Fighting Illini with 33 points a year ago.
Marquette climbed back into the game early in the second half when senior Kelly Roethe sent a ball to junior striker Katherine Ward, who converted for the Golden Eagles' first goal of 1999. However, Illinois regained the two-goal lead just minutes later on a goal by Tara Schuling.
"We came out well in the second half," Roeders said. "But every time we got a little momentum going, they took it away from us."
The Golden Eagles look to bounce back against cross-state rival Wisconsin this coming Sunday, when they make their 1999 Valley Fields debut at 1 p.m.
