Colson Shoots 75 at USGA Public Links Event

LEBANON, Ohio ? Marquette senior Nathan Colson shot a 75 in the first round of two rounds of seed qualifying for the 80th U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Shaker Run Golf Club in Lebanon, Ohio.
Colson started his day shooting par on the first hole, but a bogey on the 450-yard par four second led to a three-over 38 on the front nine. Colson also shot a bogey on the eighth and ninth holes.
A bogey on the 383-yard par four 12th and another on the 184-yard par three 14th started Colson's back nine. He recovered for a birdie on the 410-yard par four 15th for his only birdie of the day, but he shot a six on the par-five 17th. After a par on 18, he finished his day at 75.
This is the second trip to the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship for Colson. He finished sixth in qualifying two years ago, but was eliminated in the first round of match play.
Chan Song and Garrett Jones each shot 66 to lead the event through 18 holes. The lone female in the event, 15-year-old Michelle Wie, shot a 76 in the first round.
Colson begins the second and final round of qualifying at 9:40 a.m. (EDT).
Marquette golfers compete in Wisconsin State Amateur
ONEIDA, Wis. ? Marquette and former Marquette golfers were also competing in the Wisconsin State Amateur Open at Brown County Golf Club in Oneida, Wis.
Kyle Murphy, a Marquette senior in 2005, shot even par, seven strokes off the pace. Steve Sass, a Marquette senior-to-be in 2005-06, also shot an even-par, 72. The duo is tied for 16th place.
Joe Weber, a senior to be next season, shot a 73 along with former Marquette golfer Mark Wentz. Play at the WSGA State Amateur continues through July 14.
