MU golfer advances to the field of 64
LEBANON, Ohio ? Marquette senior Nathan Colson advanced to the match play rounds at the U.S. Public Links Championships in Lebanon, Ohio, at Shaker Run Golf Club.
He shot a 74 on the second day to finish in a tie for 58th place at nine-over, 149.
He will play Jeffery Overton in the first round at 12:12 p.m. (EDT). Overton finished in a tie for fifth in the qualifying rounds with a one-under.
This is Colson's second trip to the U.S. Public Links event. He was advanced to match play two years ago, before losing in the first round.
Marquette Golfers Strong at Wisconsin State Amateur
ONEIDA, Wis. ? Four golfers with Marquette ties have shot a two-round 145 at the Wisconsin State Amateur Open at Brown County Golf Club in Oneida.
Kyle Murphy, a 2004-05 senior; Chris Streff, a freshman last season; and Steve Sass and Joe Weber, seniors-to-be, fired the matching scores through 18 holes. All four are eight strokes off the pace, tied for ninth.
Former MU standout Mark Wentz is one stroke behind the Marquette foresome in ninth at 146.
Former MU player Edvins Erkmanis is at 148.
Play continues through Thursday at the four-round event.
