Golden Eagles open up season strong
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio ? The Marquette golf team started its season strong, posting a third place standing after two rounds at the John Piper Intercollegiate.
The Golden Eagles shot a 571 over the two rounds to place third. They trail second place Ohio by four strokes and are within striking distance of the Bobcats. Bowling Green's no. 1 team set a tournament record through two round, shooting a 14-under, 562.
Marquette individuals posted a strong first day, with three in the top 10. Freshman Mike Van Sickle got his college career off to a flying start, sitting in third after two rounds. He shot a 69 in his first collegiate round, followed by a 70 in round two. He is just two shots off the lead, held by Oakland's Jonathan Pauli, who is at 135.
Senior Nathan Colson returns to the squad after a redshirt season with a good first day. He is at 141 and is in sixth place. Senior Kyle Murphy is one shot behind Colson in 10th.
Rounding out the players for Marquette is senior Joe Weber in 31st at 149 and sophomore Ted Gray in 44th at 151.
Day two of the John Piper will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Stone Ridge Golf Club.
