Three golfers from the Marquette golf program advanced in the qualifying stages for the U.S. Open on May 16 at the Washington County Golf Course in Hartford.
Mike Johnston, a letterwinner from 1997 to 1999, senior Nathan Colson and freshman Dustin Schwab were among the five who advanced in local qualifying.
Johnston won the event with a five-under 67 to secure his spot in the next round. Johnson birdied the second and eagled the third hole to start strong. Bogeys on no. 5 and no. 9 were offset by four other birdies.
Colson and Schwab also were easy qualifiers at one-under 71.
Colson had to fight his way back into contention. After an eagle on three, he bogeyed both seven and eight to return to even par. A birdie on 11 was followed by a bogey on 14. A birdie on 17 secured his spot under par.
Schwab remained under-par for most of the back nine. Birdies on three and seven put him at two under. Bogies on nine and 11 returned him to par, but a birdie on 12 put him at one under. Pars on the remaining six holes put him in a qualifying spot.
"It's a great feat for three golfers from this program to advance in qualifying," head coach Tim Grogan said. "For Mike and Nathan, it shows that they are quality golfers. It's very impressive for a freshman like Dustin to do so well at an event like this."
A nine-way tie at even-par 72 forced a playoff for the remaining two spots and two alternates.
The five golfers advance to sectional qualifying rounds, which will be held between May 29 and June 6. Qualifiers from those tournaments advance to the U.S. Open, scheduled for June 15-18 at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y.
