No. 72 Western Michigan Shuts Out Marquette, 7-0

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's tennis team was unable to come away with a victory Friday and was shutout by No. 72 Western Michigan, 7-0. With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 1-4 on the spring dual season.

Despite coming close in all three doubles matches, each Marquette pair fell 8-6 to its Western Michigan counterpart, leaving the Broncos to take the early 1-0 lead.

Western Michigan used its momentum from winning the doubles point and kept its solid play in singles competition. Kerstin Pahl captured the Broncos first singles win and defeated Maria Calbeto, 6-0, 6-1, at the no. 2 spot.

The rest of the Golden Eagles played strong against their opponents but were not able to hold on for the win. After losing the first set, 6-2, sophomore Lauren Little went ahead 3-0 in the second set but Carrie Jeanmarie was able to overcome the deficit and win set, 7-5, and claim the no. 1 singles win.

Junior Erin Watkins took her first set to a tie-breaker, but fell to Priyanka Parekh, 7-6 (4), 6-3, at no. 3 singles. Freshman Elly Strother and junior Francina Bonnelly were in the same situation at no. 5 and 6 singles, respectively. Strother was downed by Ashley Moccia, 7-6 (1), 6-4, while Bonnelly lost to Milica Zivanovic, 7-6 (8), 6-3.

"We had our chances in doubles," said assistant coach Heather Saluri. "We need to work on our mental toughness and to step it up a notch. We are right there playing well, we just need to be more mentally tough to finish the match and get the win."

The Golden Eagles return to action Sunday, Feb. 4, at no. 43 Indiana.
