No. 66 Western Michigan Edges Marquette, 4-3

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Marquette women's tennis team opened its match at No. 66 Western Michigan winning the first three points, but was unable to hold on as the Broncos won the remaining singles matches and defeated the Golden Eagles, 4-3, on Saturday at the West Hills Athletic Club.
The loss to the Broncos is the second to a ranked team this season and the Golden Eagles fall to 0-4 overall.
The Golden Eagles earned wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to take the first point of the match and go ahead, 1-0. Senior Maria Calbeto and freshman Christina Ruiz teamed for the first time this season and pulled out a 9-7 win over Emily Dudzik and Kerstin Pahl and No. 2 doubles.
Senior Shannon Brown and junior Lauren Little followed with their second victory of the season at No. 1 defeating Ashley Moccia and Yumi Matsuto, 8-6.
In singles play, Marquette got back-to-back wins from junior Robin Metzler and freshman Rachael Hush to push the Golden Eagles' lead to 3-0. Metzler defeated Moccia at No. 5, 6-2, 6-3, and Hush downed Matsuto in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. It was Metzler's first match of the season since returning from injury and Hush's first win of the spring campaign.
From there, the Broncos staged their come back and won the final four matches to take the match, 4-3.
Noriko Saruta downed Ruiz, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 3 singles. At No. 2 singles, Calbeto forced a three-set match, but fell short to Priyanka Parekh, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. Senior Erin Watkins, who played her first match at the top singles position, was edged by No. 98 Kerstin Pahl, 7-6, 6-2.
In the match decider, freshman Elly Strother won the first set, 6-2, but was unable to come away victorious dropping the final two sets, 7-5, 6-2.
The Golden Eagles will play Ball State on Sunday in Kalamazoo, Mich., at 10 a.m.
