MU Sweeps Ball State, 7-0

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Marquette University women's tennis team earned its first win of the season Sunday, sweeping Ball State University 7-0 in dual match action in Kalamazoo, Mich.
"It was so great for us to win, 7-0," said head coach Jody Bronson. "After being so close in so many matches, we wanted this win so bad. Every time we step on the court we expect to win. Our team is committed to that and true determination showed today."
The Golden Eagles (1-4) began strong, winning all three doubles matches to take the early 1-0 lead. The No. 1 doubles team of senior Maria Calbeto and freshman Christina Ruiz easily handled Ball State University's No. 1 pair of Sophie Quist and Georgina Thomson, 8-2. MU's No. 2 pair secured the doubles point with senior Erin Watkins and freshman Rachael Hush prevailing over Emma Retter and Hayley Hall 8-4. Junior Lauren Little and senior Shannon Brown added to the damage with a 8-5 score over Haly Calderwood and Jennifer Pollack as Marquette swept the doubles portion in Kalamazoo.
Marquette never looked back after taking the early lead. The next three singles easily overtook BSU in two sets apiece. Ruiz earned a singles point by shutting out Pollack, posting two 6-0 wins at No. 3 singles. Calbeto proved victorious against Calderwood 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 to go ahead 3-0. Freshman Elly Strother earned the fourth and winning point of the match for the Golden Eagles defeating Katherine Rist 6-3, 6-3, at No. 6.
MU's No. 1, 4 and 5 singles exhibited their strength in continuing the sweep of the Cardinals. Hush beat Emma Retter 6-0, 3-6, 6-1. Robin Metzler took a 2-6, 6-4, 12-10 victory over Georgina Thomson. Watkins secured the sweep by posting scores of 6-7 (4), 6-1, 10-4 over Sophie Quist at the No. 1 slot.
With the loss, Ball State drops to 2-2.
The Golden Eagles will be in action next against Iowa on Friday, Feb. 8 at 4 p.m. in Iowa City, Iowa.
