Louisville Tops Marquette, 77-61

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Marquette University women's basketball team had three players in double figures, but it was not enough as Louisville topped the Golden Eagles, 77-61, Tuesday night at Freedom Hall.
The loss puts Marquette at 14-11 overall, 5-7 in BIG EAST play, while Louisville snaps its five-game losing streak to move to 12-14 overall, 4-9 in league play.
Monique Reid led all scorers with 26 points and 15 rebounds, while Becky Burke contributed 19 and Asia Taylor added 14 for the Cardinals who shot 56.5 percent (26-of-46) for the game, including 66.7 percent (14-of-21) in the second half.
Angel Robinson led Marquette with 15 points, while Jessica Pachko added 13 from the bench and Tatiyiana McMorris contributed 10 points. For the game, MU connected on 36.7 percent (22-of-60) of its attempts from the floor.
Ahead by just one point at halftime, 35-34, the Cardinals opened the second half with a 14-4 run to take a 11-point advantage, 49-38. The Golden Eagles cut Louisville's advantage to four points on two occasions, but that was as close as the Golden Eagles would come.
With Marquette trailing by five with 4:20 remaining, Becky Burke hit a 3-pointer which sparked a 7-0 run to put Louisville ahead 69-59 with 2:23 to play. The Cardinals closed the game by outscoring MU, 8-2, to seal the 77-61 victory.
Louisville and Marquette each led by as many as six points in the first. The Cardinals jumped out to a quick 11-5 advantage five minutes into the game, but Marquette quickly tied it and went ahead four points, 15-11, following a 10-0 run.
Lousiville responded with a 8-4 run to tie the score 19-19 before pulling ahead 27-22 with 4:41 left in the first half.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action at the Al McGuire Center to host their fifth annual Pink Out on Saturday, Feb. 20 against DePaul. Tip-off on BIG EAST TV is set for 1 p.m. The game will be shown locally on Sports32.
