MILWAUKEE – Sophomore Theo John had his first career double-double and Markus Howard turned in a near triple-double as Marquette claimed a 67-42 victory over UMBC in the first regular season game at the new Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee.
The Golden Eagles (1-0) held the Retrievers to just 22.6 percent shooting from the floor (14-of-62), an opponent low for the five-year tenure of MU head coach Steve Wojciechowski. Howard and classmate Sam Hauser led MU with 15 points apiece, while John added 11 points to go along with 10 rebounds and three blocks.
Howard ended with eight rebounds and seven assists, leaving him just shy of becoming the first MU player to record a triple double since Dwyane Wade in 2003.
Arkel Lamar was the lone UMBC player to reach double figures with 11 points, while Whitefish Bay native Joe Sherburne had eight points in the loss.
Freshman Brendan Bailey scored the first NCAA regular season points in Fiserv Forum history with a 3-pointer from the right wing with 19:48 remaining in the opening frame. The Salt Lake City native finished with five points in his NCAA debut.
UMBC posted 18 points and shot just 18.5 percent from the floor in the second half (5-of-27).
