Marquette closed its season-opening tournament with a field-best 7-under-par round on Tuesday
VERONA, WIs. — Identical final round 68s for Hunter Eichhorn and Oliver Farrell lifted Marquette to a 7-under-par final round score, and a fifth-place finish (294-292-281—867) in the season-opening Badger Invitational at University Ridge G.C.
Eichhorn tied for third place in his season debut with an 8-under-par tournament (71-69-68–208), finishing five strokes off the pace set by medalist Joey Vrzich of Nevada (13-under-par). He had to shake off a 3-over-par start in his first three holes, teeing off on the Par 5 sixth, but went 7-under-par the rest of the day, including eagles at No. 16 and No. 2. His three eagles in the tournament led the field.
The 8-under-par score is the second-lowest versus par for Eichhorn in 11 collegiate starts, one off his career-best of 9-under-par, set twice last season.
Farrell earned his first top-10 finish since last October, carding a 1-under-par to finish alone in 10th place (72-75-68—215). His finale included four birdies and an eagle on the Par 5 16th. On Par 5s, Farrell played 10-under-par, tied for the tournament low.
Marquette's 281 final round score was the lowest in the field on Tuesday. The Golden Eagles had their most success on the back nine in the shotgun start, going 5-under-par as a team with 13 birdies and eagles from Eichhorn and Farrell.
Illinois State (9-under-par) claimed top honors, five strokes clear of second-place Kansas.
Playing for the first time since last October's Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills, individual Charlie Maleki just missed a top-20 finish - the senior's 4-over-par 220 (73-73-73) was tied for 23rd.
Marquette returns to Rich Harvest Farms for the Northern Intercollegiate this Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 15-16) - the Golden Eagles set school records for lowest score (832) and score versus par (32-under-par) on the way to a win in 2017.
