Marquette drops its first home match of the season
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's soccer team fell to a feisty Penn team, 1-0, in extra time at Valley Fields on Thursday night.
Â
After a scoreless 90 minutes, the Quakers (2-0-1) capitalized on one of their three overtime corner chances with Alex Touche heading in the golden goal in the 95th minute on a Brandon Bartel service.
Â
The Golden Eagles (2-2-0) were the aggressor for the majority of the match, holding the overall edge in shots (11-7) and corners (10-6), but were unable to break through against the defensive-minded Penn squad.
Â
Junior Connor Alba led the way for Marquette with a game-high three shots, while Tode Atlija, Steffen Bohm and Oliver Posarelli posted a pair of shots each. Atlija registered the lone shot on target for MU, which came in the 65th minute.
Senior keeper Luis Barazza made three saves on the night, while his counterpart, Scott Forbes, needed just one save to preserve his second shutout of the season.
The Golden Eagles were whistled for 18 fouls as compared to Penn's four. The loss marks Marquette's first of the season on their home field, where they won't return next until the BIG EAST Conference opener against No. 15 Villanova on Saturday, Sept. 15.
Â
Marquette takes on Michigan on the road Monday, Sept. 10. Kickoff is slated for a 6:30 p.m. Central time start in Ann Arbor.
