Maddie Monticello scored the lone goal for Golden Eagles
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women's soccer team fell 2-1 to Xavier on Thursday night at Valley Fields, snapping its unbeaten streak at four matches.
Junior Maddie Monticello scored her first career goal for the Golden Eagles (6-9-1, 3-3-1 BIG EAST) after Xavier scored a pair of early goals, but Marquette could not complete the comeback.
The Musketeers (12-3-2, 5-2-0) jumped out to a 2-0 advantage by the seventh minute on goals from Grace Bahr and Molly McLaughlin. Bahr's fifth minute tally came on a penalty kick after Natalie Yass was called for a foul on the BIG EAST's leading scorer Samantha Dewey in the box. McLaughlin's score came off a Bahr corner that connected at the far post.
Monticello pulled the Golden Eagles within one in the 24th minute on a header inside the goal box. The score came off a corner that crept over to the far side where Kylie Sprecher corralled the ball and sent it in to the head of Monticello.
Xavier jumps to the top of the BIG EAST standings with 15 points after the victory while the Golden Eagles remain at 10 points with two matches remaining at Butler and DePaul. MU is tied for fifth with Villanova and Providence and only the top six teams make the conference tournament.
The Golden Eagles resume conference play on Sunday, Oct. 27 against Butler at noon Central time at the Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis. The match will air live on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
