The Golden Eagles have one match remaining on Thursday at DePaul
INDIANAPOLIS – The Marquette University women's soccer team fell to Butler, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis.
The Golden Eagles (6-10-1, 3-4-1 BIG EAST) were outshot 17-7 in their second straight loss after a four-match unbeaten streak. Their loss keeps them at 10 points in the league standings with a single regular season match remaining on Thursday at DePaul. Only the league's top six teams make the postseason tournament and MU was tied with Providence for sixth at the conclusion of Sunday's match.
Butler (10-4-3, 5-1-2 BIG EAST) took three of the game's five corner kicks and goalkeeper Stephanie Rodriguez made a pair of second half saves in the win.
The Bulldogs struck first in the sixth minute as Macy Miller weaved from the midfield up the left side before ripping a shot at the MU net. MU goalkeeper Maddy Henry was able to get a hand on the ball, but not enough to stop it from rolling over the goal line. Miller has scored her first two goals of the season in each of MU's last two matches.
Butler would add goals in the 36th and 44th minute from Katie Soderstrom and Alana Wood, respectively, to take a 3-0 edge into the half. The Bulldogs held an 11-3 advantage in shots in the first half.
Marquette has lost its last three contests against Butler and is 3-5-1 in the all-time series, which dates to Marquette's third season of competition in 1995.
The Golden Eagles have just one regular season match remaining at long-time rival DePaul on Halloween in Chicago.
