Five Golden Eagles had hat tricks in the victory
DELAND, Florida – The Marquette University women's lacrosse team shot out to an early 6-0 lead at Stetson on Sunday afternoon and cruised to a 19-8 victory at the Athletic Training Center in DeLand, Florida.
Senior midfielder Grace Gabriel scored a natural hat trick to begin the game for the Golden Eagles (4-4) who are at the start of a nine-day, three-game road trip over spring break. It was her fourth tally at the 21:57 mark of the first gave MU its 6-0 edge and the Golden Eagles took a 16-4 lead into the half while out-shooting Stetson 23-11.
Junior Megan Menzuber posted a game-high five points on three goals and two assists, while sophomore Caroline Steller and freshman Shea Garcia each notched four first half points. It was a new career-high for Steller, who made her second career start with two of MU's top-three leading scorers out of the lineup in Charlotte McGuire and Cate Soccodato.
Marquette used a second 6-0 run at the end of the opening frame before SU's Quinn Roe notched the stanza's final score with 15 seconds remaining.
The Hatters (0-5) were able to get the score back within single digits in the second half, before Bridget Danko closed out the scoring with her first two goals since her freshman season of 2017. Her two goals on Sunday came in the final four minutes of regulation.
Redshirt freshman Lindsey Hill's first career goal came as the first marker of the second half with 26:57 remaining. Â
The Golden Eagles resume action on Friday, March 15 at Canisius and will also face Niagara while in New York on Sunday, March 17 before returning home.
