The Golden Eagles continue their road trip at Niagara on Sunday before returning to Milwaukee
BUFFALO – The Marquette University women's lacrosse team used a 12-1 run to roll to a 19-8 victory over Canisius on Friday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.
Graduate student Charlotte McGuire, who missed Sunday's game at Stetson, posted a game-high five goals for the Golden Eagles (5-4), who received four scores from Grace Gabriel as well. Cate Soccodato, who also was absent in the win at Stetson, notched a goal and a game-high three assists.
Marquette led 12-4 at the half after outshooting Canisius, 27-9, over the first 30 minutes of action. The Golden Eagles trailed 3-2 with 21:55 remaining in the first half before reeling off a 10-1 run to close out the frame.
MU continued to stretch its lead to 10 goals (14-4) early in the second half as freshman Shea Garcia and senior Lindsey Willcocks scored the first two goals of the stanza.
The Golden Griffins made a little run to cut into their deficit and appeared to pull within seven, 14-7, following a Jourdan Roemer score. But the goal was disallowed for an illegal stick and Marquette was able to push its lead to 13 at 19-6 following back-to-back goals by Caroline Steller with 9:26 remaining.
In total, MU outshot the Golden Griffins, 46-18, and won the ground ball battle, 20-13, though Canisius did hold a 16-12 advantage in draw controls.
Rachel Heidenreich, Bryar Cummings and Marissa Malvaso all scored twice for the Golden Griffins (0-7).
The Golden Eagles will stay in western New York to face Niagara on Sunday at 11 a.m. Central time before returning to Milwaukee.
