Grace Gabriel set program's single-season draw control record in Colorado
DENVER, Colo. – The Marquette University women's lacrosse team fell at No. 15 Denver on Friday night, 21-11.
The Golden Eagles (8-8, 2-2 BIG EAST) were led by senior Grace Gabriel's four points off of four goals, alongside two ground balls, two caused turnovers and seven draw controls to eclipse the single-season program record she set just last year (109 draw controls). Junior Megan Menzuber added in a hat trick of her own, while freshman Shea Garcia rounded out multi-score efforts for Marquette with two tallies.
Denver (12-2, 3-0 BIG EAST) opened up the contest on a 6-0 run through the first 8 minutes of action before Garcia notched a woman-up goal to put Marquette on the board. The Golden Eagles went on to score three straight in a 3 minute span midway through the first, but the Pioneers answered with a trio of their own tallies. Denver would never surrender its lead.
Gabriel and Menzuber helped the Golden Eagles start the second half with force, scoring the first two goals of the frame and each tallying three goals in those final 30 minutes. However, Denver used free position opportunities to their advantage en route to stacking up a 10-goal lead with 3:18 remaining in the game.
Marquette goalie Jules Horning totaled four saves in 38:21 while Sophia Leva added a save in her 21:39 in the net for MU. Marquette owned the edge in saves (5-3), draw controls (20-14) and woman-up opportunities (2-1).
The Pioneers, who remain undefeated in conference play, were led by Eliza Radochonski with six goals off the bench.
Marquette return shome to Valley Fields for the regular season finale – which also serves as Senior Day and the team's annual PanCan game – on Saturday, April 27 at 2 p.m. CT against Georgetown.
