The two squads haven't met since they were BIG EAST foes in 2012
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's soccer team concludes its exhibition slate with a final tune-up against Notre Dame at Alumni Stadium in Notre Dame, Indiana on Sunday at 3 p.m.
The Golden Eagles are coming off a 5-0 victory over the University of Regina in their exhibition opener on Wednesday night at Valley Fields. Graduate transfer Natalie Yass (Northern Illinois) scored twice, while fellow newcomer and freshman Alex Campana scored to join returnees Bri Jaeger and Abby Hess. Marquette maintained possession for most of the match, firing 22 shots to UR's three and taking all seven of the game's corner kicks.Â
Notre Dame, which fell 1-0 to Ohio State in a scrimmage on Wednesday, returns seven of 11 starters under second-year head coach Nate Norman. The Fighting Irish went 8-10 in his first season in 2018, including a 4-6 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference action. ND was projected to finish ninth in the ACC this season.
The last meeting between the two Midwestern Catholic institutions came in 2012 when the Irish were still members of the BIG EAST Conference. Marquette won that matchup, 1-0, in the BIG EAST semifinals on its way to its first BIG EAST tournament crown. In non-exhibition action, ND holds a 7-3 advantage in the all-time series, though MU has won two of the last three meetings. All but one of the 10 matchups came from 2005-12 when the two were BIG EAST counterparts.
Marquette-Notre Dame-USWNT Ties: Former Notre Dame standout Kate (Sobrero) Markgraf was announced as the first ever general manager of the United States Women's National Team on Monday afternoon. Markgraf, who lives in Milwaukee, was a volunteer assistant coach for Marquette during the 2009 season.
