Marquette-Ok. State Series Dates To 1990
The Golden Eagles and Cowboys have met on five occasions in the all-time series, with Oklahoma State claiming four of the matchups.
Marquette was victorious in the most recent outing, however, claiming a 91-61 victory in the semifinals of the 2007 Maui Invitational. MU advanced to the championship game with the win and fell to Duke, which featured Steve Wojciechowski on the staff, 77-73, in the title game.
The programs have also met in postseason action, with the Cowboys claiming a 74-62 win in the opening round of the 1993 NCAA tournament in Indianapolis, Ind.
Garcia Claims BIG EAST Weekly Honor
Forward Dawson Garcia, the BIG EAST Preseason Freshman of the Year, is living up to the hype early in 2020-21 and as a result claimed the league's first weekly newcomer accolade of the season on Monday.
Through two outings, he leads the team in scoring with 17.5 points per game and is also contributing 6.0 rebounds per game while shooting 55.6 percent from the field (10-of-18) and 66.7 percent (4-of-6) from deep.
John Collects Strong Performance In Opener
For the second time in three seasons, forward Theo John opened the season with a double-double and now owns six for his career.
In 23 minutes against UAPB, John collected 13 points, 12 rebounds (career high) and five blocked shots. He also knocked down 9-of-10 free throws, making a single-game personal best in charity tosses made and attempted. He followed that up with nine points and nine rebounds in 29 minutes against Eastern Illinois, including his first career 3-pointer both made and attempted in 99 games (over 300 total shots).
The Minneapolis, Minn., native has also chipped in seven blocked shots in two games and is now fourth all-time at Marquette with 158 swats, passing Luke Fischer (153, 2014-17).
John finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds in the 2018-19 season-opening victory over UMBC as a sophomore. A career 54.5 percent free throw shooter, John is 11-of-13 (84.6 percent) from the charity stripe through the first two outings in 2020-21.
